I wish the world was full of trees
their giant trunks and spreading leaves
swaying somber in the breeze
fertile vast green endless seas

rugged features carved by age
sagging branches sought for shade
towering over all that's made
by tiny hands that work then fade

I wish we hadn't cut them down
felled the mighty cleared the ground
quelled the ancient forest sounds
what's easily lost is not easily found

now many lives must come must go
before old groves again may grow
before children's children's children know
things worth loving grow ever slow
